New York is OUR city, the place we visit when we need a dose of art, culture, baseball or the incredible diversity only NYC can offer. No offense, Philadelphia - we love you, too, but New York holds a special place in many of our hearts.
When something bad happens in New York, it does not feel like it happened in a far away place. Rather, it feels like it happened in our own backyard. Maybe that is why news about the failed car bombing in Times Square this past weekend aroused such feelings of anger, anxiety and upset here at home. News of terrorist attacks anywhere shock and sadden us, but news of terrorism in NYC stops us in our tracks.
Thankfully, no one was hurt. I hope the police, FBI and other law enforcement piece together the evidence and find the responsible party quickly and without further incident. A little more than an hour ago, the Senate approved historic healthcare legislation that the House of Representatives will confirm in a final vote this evening. However, as this day draws to a close, I am looking ahead.
So much misinformation has circulated this past year that many people have little idea, or even an absolutely incorrect idea, of what the legislation will mean for them. I hope that most Americans will be relieved when they finally begin to experience an actual impact on their lives.
Though two of health care reform's main goals are fighting insurance company abuses and significantly reducing federal deficits, detractors continue to argue that reform will hurt our health care system and will create mountains of debt. I am interested to see both whether the reforms will achieve their stated goals and whether such achievements will have any impact at all on those who continue to vehemently reject them.
Other opponents reject the stipulation that everyone must buy into the system or must face financial penalties - penalties that will offset the high costs of emergency room visits, a common first line of defense in the health care of the uninsured. In effect, all Americans must now take some responsibility for their own care. They must support the system or they must help cover the potential costs of their not doing so. I am hoping this will prove to be a fair and effective way to manage the challenge of making sure Americans who do want insurance - most Americans - can get it.
I guess we will have to wait and see.

Times-Tribune describes an accident on the Morgan Highway that seriously injured four people, including a baby. This South Abington Township car accident occurred when a driver swerved into oncoming traffic, sideswiping one vehicle and then colliding head-on with another. A fourth vehicle tried to avoid the crash, but could not avoid hitting the vehicle that had already been struck head-on.

| Recent allegations that a Scranton detective was found armed, drunk and unconscious in an unmarked police car this past Christmas Eve have renewed public interest in another story about a different Scranton police officer being sued by a Scranton couple into whose car he crashed while pulling an illegal U-turn last January.
According the the Times-Tribune, the couple filed suit against the officer in November, alleging that the accident caused serious and permanent injuries. The couple is also suing the city for what they describe as its failure to properly train, monitor and supervise the officer.
The outcome of the case remains to be seen, but I feel for the couple filling the charges.

| The Times-Tribune reported today that a Carbondale man died Thursday as a result of an automobile accident on the Casey Highway.
